Are you a consumer or a creator?

It’s time to put your inner creator to work.

When was the last time you created something?  Maybe it was a term paper, a speech, a t-shirt design, or something else that was created by your mind and hands.  I think that God, the original and ultimate creator, put it in our DNA to be creators as well.  It’s why a child has this strange urge to [Read more…] about Are you a consumer or a creator?

The Church and Technology

It’s been a great blessing to be a part of the Good Morning Show on 760 AM in Nashville, TN. David Gould and Rachael Sain are the co-hosts and I have known David through the Wesleyan Church for some time. He’s a frequent viewer of The Techology Show and from that “Tech Talk Tuesday” came about.  On December 28, 2011 we talked about how church’s can use technology in the coming year.  There are lots of challenges rural churches face in the use of technology.  I’m a rural pastor who believes technology is a gift to reach the world.  Here are a few things we talked about this week:

  • Just this week our church created our new website using WordPress(and BLUEHOST.COM).  We including a link to our Twitter account and Facebook Group.  It’s still under construction, but our main goal was to get directions and sermons up initially.
  • We are also utilizing YouVersion to provide interactive sermon notes during worship.  This week I could access the notes online, but not through my phone which was a bit of a let down.
I encourage you to listen to the whole show.  My segment starts around the 27:00 mark.

Blog Renovations

Time for a Renovation

It’s been almost two years since I started Chase Your Lion and it’s time for some Blog Renovations.  It has been such a great learning experience and blessing for me.  I know I’ve been hot and cold with the blog.  My brain knows what to do, but yada yada yada.  I’ve discovered two great blogs since October 2009 that have been a tremendous encouragement and guide to great blogging.  Michael Hyatt and John Saddington(aka The Tentblogger) have two of the best blogs out there and give great tips and advice.  A lot of what you see here is a result of what I see them do as far as look and feel.  We all use Tentblogger’s Standard Theme.  Believe me, it is the easiest premium theme I have purchased and used by far.

With all that in mind, it’s time for some Blog Renovations around here.  It’s going to be a lot of work, but here’s an overview of what’s happening.

  1. I have switched from the All In One SEO Pack to Yoast’s WordPress SEO.  These are plugins that give your blog a better chance of being discovered on search engines(Search Engine Optimization).  I took the time to write this stuff.  I want people to find it and read it.  Yoast’s plugin is easier to use and has deeper options.
  2. I will be adding a picture to every post to make the nRelate Related Content plugin look prettier.  It will hopefully get more [Read more…] about Blog Renovations

Building a Church Website on WordPress

This week we will begin the task of creating a website for Oakway Wesleyan Church.  Since I am most familiar with WordPress as a publishing platform we will be using it to build our site.  Tony Morgan had a great post on this a few years back.  My question is this:  What’s the most important thing about a church website?  I would say the number 1 priority will be keeping it updated.  I will be training others to do the basic tasks to accomplish that.  I don’t think it matters how flashy or fancy your church website is if the information is outdated.  I have personally been guilty of this with youth websites and the like.  Ease of use and up to date information are a must for our site.  Above that, what should our focus be?  I really like what FWC/ALIVE has done with their website to help people build connections.  Should we podcast ASAP or should that be a later priority?  What wordpress themes have you seen/used that look/work great for churches?  I would love your thoughts on this.  Is wordpress the wrong way to go?  What are you using with your church?
