On the Road Wednesday

Well, after only going 120 miles in the first 4 hours we made it to Cherryville in 12 hours.  561 miles baby.  It was this same weekend last year that we first visited Chi United.  It has been a long strange journey of a year.  It seems that a lot of churches are contacting us now and we hope that this weekend will be the one.

1.  I am soooooooooo tired.  Hopefully, a good nights sleep will help me get ready for Indiana Jones tomorrow night!

2.  Perry Noble has been out at Saddleback church this week.  Check out his blog to read some great stuff.

3.  I am watching American Idol tonight for the first time.  Ratings have dropped and it started with the 5 Mullikin’s.  I’m hoping Paul let’s me watch Ultimate Fighter tonight.

4.  I am now 35-32 as a Facebook wrestler.  Yes, I am a geek.  No, it hasn’t gotten old yet.

5.  Why do I hear George Michael songs coming out of my in-laws living room?

6.  Just a few days left until the Rhodes-Mullikin-Boyd reunion!  No animals will be harmed in the making of this party.

7.  Thoughts and prayers to Sen. Ted Kennedy.  I may not agree with his politics, but we can agree to pray for a healthy recovery.

8.  Matt LeRoy reads my blog and that mug even txted me!  He’s one of the newest players added to the NC East team.  His dad is gonna win DS of the year for his acquisitions!

9.  Keep praying for NC East senior high camp.  The messages are coming together and God is giving clear direction.

Time to watch some UFC!

Tuesday curveballs

Well, a few things didn’t work out like I had hoped they would.  It doesn’t really affect me, but still a little disappointed for some friends.  Anyway…

1.  How bout Jon Lester pitching a no-hitter for the Red Sox last night?  If only he had done it in Baltimore last Wednesday!

2.  We leave in the morning for North Carolina.  Pray for safe travel, clear direction(literally and spiritually), and for a good weekend interview.

3.  Can’t wait to see some SC people on Sunday and Monday!

4.  I’m sorry, but I still love watching wrestling.

5.   Still waiting for  some pastors to call me back…reminds me of the Seinfeld scene where Keith Hernandez hasn’t called him back and he says,”What , are there no phone where you live?  Pick up a  phone!  That’s it, I’m done with these men.”

6.  I still don’t believe the puppet story although Kris, Nate, and Bryan have confirmed it.

7.  Had a dream that Clemson will start 0-2 in football this season.  Folks, we ain’t never getting rid of Tommy Bowden.  Here’s to another 8 or 9 win season with a disappointing bowl loss.

8.  Performed the sad task of moving all my files and bookmarks off of the church laptop yesterday.  Kinda had deja vu from last year.  I’m just praying I did the Itunes library correctly.  Luckily, I have an external hard drive and didn’t have to use 54 Cd’s.

9.  Mom, if you’re reading this, can you work up some homemade mac and cheese for Monday?  Or anything off a grill.

10.  Not sure how often I will get to post the rest of the week so I want to express my thanks to all those who have served our country and paid the ultimate price for our freedom.  They have a courage that I can only dream about having.

It’s a great day to be Monday!

Nothing helps get you through a long church conference like knowing there’s a baptism to follow.  I had the privilege of helping Pastor Mike yesterday in a 58 degree pool.  Two teens got baptized.  It’s always an awesome sight to see.  Better yet, it was at our house(well, the house of the people we are renting space from) so I could just walk to my door afterwards.

1.  I am digging “God of this City” by Chris Tomlin.  What an amazing song!

2.  We leave Wednesday for a weekend interview in North Carolina.  Then we’ll spend Memorial Day in South Carolina.  The next few weeks are going to be very hectic because we are trying to line up a job and move in the span of about 3 weeks.  Of course, God could change all of this.  I just know that I’ll be at NC East Sr. high Camp on June 22nd as the speaker.  Now, I’m trying to figure out if I’ll be there for Middle School camp on the 15th as a youth pastor.  That means I would be in a cabin with the kids for the first time since 1997, but it also means that I will have my first opportunity to win a camp bucket!  I tell you, that’s a great invention that other camps should steal like I did.

3.  Speaking of speaking at Senior High camp, pray for me.  God is challenging me to speak on a deeper level than camp normally goes.  I believe He is calling me to open a can of worms that has been overlooked and neglected so that true healing can occur.  I am pumped!  It’s going to be incredible.  I just want to get out of the way!

4.  Saw Prince Caspian Friday night.  I was entertained, but this is NOT a children’s movie.  Pretty violent.  It’s Braveheart without the blood and gore.  A lot of the violence is insinuated, but it’s still there.  I like both movies about the same.  Def worth a look.

5.  Indiana Jones opens this week!  Now I’ve just got to figure out when I’m going to see it.  Gotta see it before Friday.  It depends on when we leave.  So far, it’s gotten good reviews.

I have a lot of work to get to today.  Be well my friends.

Friday is here!

What’s up people? What a week!
1. Red Sox lost the game Wednesday and I missed the three top highlights. Was getting something to eat when I heard the crowd roar(thought Orioles had scored) for Manny’s catch, high five and double play. Heard another roar when Varitek homered(there were way more Red Sox fans at this game). Took Mike’s son to the bathroom in the seventh and heard Jay Payton’s grandslam over the PA. At least I got to see them on Sportscenter. Great park, great Boog’s BBQ, and terrible traffic on the way home.
2. We are lining up an interview in NC next weekend so be praying for this opportunity. It seems like a good fit and I’ve known the pastor for a while. It means that the Rhodes will be one state away and we won’t get to see them…at least until we plant the first Hawaiian Wesleyan church.
3. Why is it that when a Republican states a historical fact that it is viewed as a political attack? Also, when they quote a Democrat. I’ve also noticed that the people that the DNC sent out to defend Obama yesterday have never won a big election. Tom Dachele lost his Senate seat in South Dakota. John Kerry lost the presidency and John Edwards ran for president twice(and lost) because he wasn’t going to win Senate re-election in NC. Now, everyone is pumped that Al Gore may endorse Obama soon. I consider myself an independent, but the Democrats primary rules-which have lead to this long nasty primary battle(which I’ve enjoyed watching by the way)-are crazy. The way they award delegates makes no sense. If I were a Democrat I’d be really angry. If I were a Republican, I’d be made that the people in Congress haven’t come up with any sort of plan and have just let the Democrats do as they wish even though they haven’t gotten much done either. I just think our political system is broken, but it’s still better than most countries. I know I’m not the only one who feels this way, but I’ve decided I’m more interested in see people transformed than trying to fix or fight a political system.
4. Took the girls to a carnival last night. Took each of the girls down this big slide, the kind where you slide on a burlap sack. About halfway down Charis started crying. When we reached the bottom I helped her up and asked,”What’s wrong?” She jumped up and said,”I’m scared-let’s do it again!”
5. Narnia is tonight! Had an awkward moment during the first one when a father kept berating his small child sitting behind us. I still wish I had said something to him, but they eventually left. It did lead to a good conversation with the youth group teens who were sitting with me about taking young kids to movies and how to act in public. Plus we are eating at Moe’s! Yes!
Well, I got calls to make, books to pack, and gotta take some medicine for this wicked head cold. Twitter that.

Wednesday with the Red Sox

Well, Pastor Mike, Andrew and I are heading to Baltimore today to catch the Red Sox-Orioles game.  The park is amazing and our seats should be pretty good.  How many other assistant pastors take off on Wednesday afternoon with their boss to see some baseball?  So, here’s a few quick thoughts for today.

1.  Pray about an opportunity we have.  We feel God is opening a door for us and He is revealing His will to us.  It’s funny that so many times we only think of our piece of the puzzle, but God has allowed me to see that their are other lives and other pieces connected with ours.  Pretty cool stuff.  More details later.

2.  Check out Tony Morgans blog and the video called City of God.  Amazing song and video.  I tell you, I love Newspring.  I know there are haters out there, but they invest in their community like few churches do.  They dream big and God blesses them more than their dreams.  I read Perry’s and Tony’s blog just hoping something will rub off on me.

3.  The next 4 weeks are going to be crazy, chaotic, and I agree with Matt and Deb-moving is no fun!  If you live in the Chichester area, most of our belongings are at Goodwill and could be had for a great price.  God is helping me let go of THINGS that I couldn’t let go of last summer.  It’s easy to get unattached from material possessions when you’ve had to move them thrice in less than a year.  Liberty to storage, storage to Wilmington, DE, and Wilmington to Aston, PA.  I’m also getting a clean start on socks and boxers(no pun intended-okay maybe a little) since I can’t find two socks that match.  It’s that sock demon again!

4.  Have I mentioned how cute my children are?  To watch Drake walk, he has a monkey like strut, makes me smile every time.  The girls are training him-but he still refuses to play with dolls.

5.  I am going to get a haircut cause it’s getting nappy up there.  Have a great day!  I’ll have a full report on the game tomorrow.

Your 15 minutes are ticking away

I heard something Sunday night that greatly disturbed me. A guy on CNN asked the question,”Has Star Jones committed career suicide by bashing Barbara Walters?” I know that Star Jones has a law degree and was on the View and had a high profile wedding(and now divorce). But has she really had enough of a “career” that she could commit entertainment career suicide. I’m even more baffled that Star Jones got time on CNN. We live in a day and age where anybody, anywhere can be a celebrity. All it takes is a great YouTube post and your 15 minutes will get started. I heard Fred Andrews say in a sermon one time that Zsa Zsa Gabor was famous simply for being famous. That is so true today. To gain fame in our 24 hour new cycle, 500 channel, internet world is not a terribly hard thing to do. People get on the cover of magazines just for going to dinner(or for having cellulite-gross!). Accomplishment has taken a back seat outrageousness and brains has taken a back seat to beauty. My fear is that many of us will get caught up the race for fame and forget that there is only One “Famous One.” That we will use our talents to seek recognition for ourselves rather than diverting the attention to the One who gave our talents(and beauty). The problem with being famous today is that it’s not that special anymore. If you don’t believe me I have four words for you-Star Jones…Kevin Federline. Our choice is to spend a lifetime trying to gain our 15 minutes of fame or to spend our lives making famous the One who created minutes.
