Youth Ministry

To Save a Life Movie Review and Thoughts

If you need help you can call 1-800-394-HOPE(4693).  Also, check out the the official To Save a Life site, the Need Help page, and the Resource page for youth pastors, parents, and students.  I believe this movie can be a wake up call to an entire generation.  How can we use it in our ministries to bring understanding, awareness, and change.  To quote Jake from the movie,”If you’re not going to let this change you then why are you here?”  Maybe we should be that on every church door frame in the country.  Again, youth pastors, this is a must see movie.  After 12 years in youth ministry I can honestly tell you that it’s the real deal.  Parents, take your teens to see this movie and instead of riding home in silence you should actually talk about it.  Pastors, don’t let the PG-13 rating alarm you.  Make your youth pastor take the teens(with parental permission of course) to see it.  Better yet, take the teens and parents together.  Let me know what you think.

More than a High-Teen resources

Our Sunday night youth Bible study is now going through Charlie Alcock’s book, More Than a High.  The goal of this book is to move people from the emotional high of a youth camp, convention, or mission trip to the daily process of becoming more like Jesus. Charlie teaches Youth Ministry at Indiana Wesleyan University and is the youth pastor at College Wesleyan Church. He has a passion for teens, a wealth of knowledge and experience in youth ministry, and is an all around good guy. It’s an inexpensive book and great for a personal or small group setting. We are on week 2 this week. Check it out.

ifollow and Youth Ministry Resources

My good friend Scott Simmons finished his first book and it has become a great discipleship tool that many youth groups are using.  Our group is almost through with the 10 week study and has thoroughly enjoyed it.  ifollow is a great resource for groups or individuals looking to take the next step in their journey with Christ.  Scott is the Director of Youth Ministries for the Wesleyan denomination.
Ifollow: Connecting Belief and Behavior to Who You Are in Christ

Welcome to the Planet is a great resource that will take your youth group through the 5 purposes of the church. This 6 week study includes powerpoints, outlines, transcripts, and games to help you promote and implement this great series.

Some Pitfalls in Youth Ministry

It has been 12 years since my graduation from Southern Wesleyan.  12 years since my interview and hiring at Central First Wesleyan Church as the youth pastor.  I have learned many lessons in those 12 years.  Some I have applied effectively and some I have not.  I guess today is a confession of those lessons I still have trouble applying.

1.  I am up front too much.  From the announcement to worship to speaking-I am always the one talking.  There have got to be other faces and voices in front of the group besides mine.  There isn’t because I hold onto things too tightly.  Instead of taking the time to train others and release their ministry potential, I just do it myself.  This can lead to burnout.  Ideally, Wednesdays would run like sunday mornings with others doing their roles and me doing mine.  Yeah, I’ve known this for a while, but haven’t done anything about it.  Chances are, you haven’t either.  If you have, add some dialogue in the comments.

2.  I drive too much.  I love driving the church van, but how much conversation am I missing out on in the back?  What if our youth group had “designated drivers” for different events which allowed me more bonding time with the kids?  What if I could have been in the middle of conversations all the way out to South Dakota?  Just a thought.

3.  Most of us have an hour a week for our main youth rally.  I used to feel bad when I would speak longer than 15 minutes.  Sometimes, I have felt like there has been an effort to cram too much stuff into that hour instead of building every thing that happens within that hour around a common theme/goal.  We are supplementing our Wednesday night meeting with a Sunday night Bible study that gets deeper into the word so that Wednesdays can be more topical.  Brad Cooper challenged me at Unleash this year when he said,”We do two things on Wednesday:  worship and the Word.  That’s it.  That involves some small group time, but we leverage our time towards those 2 things.”  I guess what I’m trying to say is I’m not going to feel guilty about preaching the Word for longer than 15 minutes.

4.  I don’t keep my wife in the loop enough.  An event may have been on my calendar for months, but it needs to be on her calendar first.  We are still trying to figure out how to do this electronically.  Women like surprises, but not that you have a cook-out at your house and people will be arriving in 15 minutes.  It’s called communication, and I shouldn’t get upset if I have to tell her about youth group stuff more than once.  How many times does she have to ask me to take care of the garbage?

5.  I don’t act my age.  I need more sleep than I’m getting.  I need to eat healthier than I’m eating.  On average, we put on several pounds a year just because we’re getting older.  Add that to what I already need to lose and it’s enough to make one relapse on Mountain Dew(oops, too late).  My 5 year old twins know I’m not supposed to be drinking it and they are quick to remind me.  It’s not about living slower, but living smarter.  You young pups would be wise to lay off the dang pizza before it’s too late.  It’s called metabolism and mine left the buidling with Elvis.

The Busy Life of a Wesleyan Pastor

I’ve been busy as a bee.

I’m sorry for the delay in posting. It has been a crazy few weeks for this Wesleyan Pastor. Here is what I’ve been doing.
1. My dog bit me last Thursday. Not sure why. There was one bad puncture wound, but it has healed. I think he was sick, but he just kinda snapped on me. We can’t do anything with him until Monday and I feel that we need to give him up. He will be eligible for adoption because the animal control officer did not consider him vicious. However, I don’t feel like I can take that chance with small children in the house. Sadly, Zorro, who has been with us for almost 7 years will no longer be with our family. My prayer is that he brings as much joy and comfort to another family as he has to us. It is a relief that we don’t have to put him down, but still very difficult for Karen and I.

2. Had to move the rest of our stuff from the storage unit to our house.

3. Trying to get our Sunday night children’s ministry off the ground.

4. Working to get a group from our church to Set Apart 07…

5. While trying to finish my work for the activities at the convention.

6. Finishing up my sermon for Sunday morning.  What good Wesleyan Pastor isn’t?

7. Held our grand re-opening for the youth center with over 25 people attending. It was a night of DDR, Tim Hawkins, Guitar hero, and a fridge full of soda.

8. Had our first Sunday pm youth meeting, FUEL, that didn’t involve painting and moving stuff.

9. Drake got shots.

10. Charis and Milena get shots tomorrow.

Whew.
Any other Wesleyan pastors who are this busy?  Am I the only one who’s having trouble sleeping?

When a Wesleyan Pastor Can’t Sleep

Ever feel like this?

I’ll be honest. I don’t know that I necessarily have anything important to say, but it is 3:34 am and I can’t sleep. I started getting a head cold on Saturday and have felt kinda yucky all weekend. There’s a busy week ahead with our grand re-opening of our youth center on Friday night. The floor needs to be painted and the room needs to be decorated. I have an idea of the look I’m trying to achieve so it’s exciting. I’m hoping I can get all of this done so I can play golf on Thursday. I am addicted to this game once again and found a nice cheap set and putter the other day that I’m interested in. My problem is I’m terrible and am just getting used to my clubs again. My putting has been tremendous, but it’s the other 80 or so shots that kill my score. I started hitting the ball better than I ever have at the end of my last round so I’m anxious to get out. I will probably always be the worst Wesleyan pastor golfer on the planet.  The last time we played threw off my whole schedule for the week [Read more…] about When a Wesleyan Pastor Can’t Sleep
