What is Christian Perseverance?

Run the race with Perseverance

The past five weeks have been some of the most trying of my entire life.  I have seen a young man I loved and invested in die much too young.  I have questioned my progress and maturity.  I have faced stress on every level and in every aspect of life.  It has been intense to say the least.  Not coincidentally, I had been preparing a message on perseverance as part of a new sermon series at Oakway Wesleyan and Common Ground Community Church(did I mention that I started pastoring 2 churches in the midst of all this).  That message came at just the right time for me.  Here’s what James chapter 1 says:

Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

Anyone can be a flash in the pan.  In the era of YouTube, anyone can be famous and some people are famous just for being famous.  Perseverance is not about being satisfied with the daily grind.  It’s about making the daily grind count.  It’s about not overlooking the little things that matter in our efforts to do one great thing that matters.  Not everyone wants to pay the price, be tested, and work their faith out over time.  Most want the answer now, success now, happiness now, riches now….

How can we persevere if we are not tested?  God’s not trying to take away the life you want.  He’s trying to give you the life you were created to have.    Paul writes in Galatians 6:

8 Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. 9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. 10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.

It’s hard to persevere when you reap destruction.  Destruction always leaves collateral damage.  Perseverance isn’t just about you, but it’s about your loved ones around you.  I’m going to hang in there.  I don’t want my son or The Son to think I’m quitting on them.

Books for Summer Reading

Read any good books lately?

I recently purchase a Kindle. It has been well worth the price so far as I have turned wasted time into reading/learning time. I love the fact that Kindle is not only a device but software for my Mac and iPhone. That way, if my wife is reading on the Kindle, I can keep up with my books on these other platforms. Amazon is having a great sale on Kindle books right now. Here’s what I’ve purchased recently for my summer reading:

  • Bring It!: The Revolutionary Fitness Plan for All Levels That Burns Fat, Builds Muscle, and Shreds Inches-From Tony Horton the p90 X guy

  • Pagan Christianity?: Exploring the Roots of Our Church Practices

  • On Who Is God?-From Mark Driscoll.  Good short read.

  • WEIRD: Because Normal Isn’t Working-from Craig Groeschel

  • Radical Together: Unleashing the People of God for the Purpose of God-Challenging read.

  • Ignite: How to Spark Immediate Growth in Your Church-Great ideas from Nelson Searcy.  Using this for training our leaders.

  • Fusion: Turning First-Time Guests into Fully-Engaged Members of Your Church-We have implemented many of the ideas from this book already.

  • The Inner Circle-I’m a huge Brad Meltzer fan.

  • Stretch Deck-Downloaded this on Kindle for iphone so I’ve always got 50 great stretches with me.  With pics and descriptions.
  • The Only Grant-Writing Book You’ll Ever Need: Top Grant Writers and Grant Givers Share Their Secrets-My wife likes to read too.  She just started writing grants for people at Grants by Karen.
  • Poke the Box-part of Seth Godin’sDomino Project.  A manifesto to get started.

That should be enough to keep me busy this summer.  What’s on your reading list?

The Next Step

Here's the Next Step

I recently shared why I haven’t been blogging consistently.  I have been reading voraciously lately(on my new Kindle) as I strive to lead Oakway Wesleyan forward.  Also, this summer I will begin ministering at Common Ground Community Church which is 9 miles from Oakway.  I will be preaching at both locations every Sunday starting in late July.  The books I’ve been reading from Nelson Searcy(like Fusion: Turning First-Time Guests into Fully-Engaged Members of Your Church) have been invaluable.  I’ve also been listening his his podcast.  I am really trying to invest a lot in my relationship with God and develop my skills as a speaker and pastor.  Another book that has influenced me is The Millionaire Messenger.  I really believe that there is money to be made online and blogging is a great way for someone to have influence and pay the bills.

I am constantly learning more and more about blogging and online marketing.  I know I’ve only scratched the surface of what I can accomplish.  I am amazed at how many people want to start blogging, but have no idea where to start or they don’t realize the full potential that blogging has to provide a platform and side income.  I am committed to:

Helping people Discover and Use their Unique Voice through blogging.

Sometimes the hardest part is getting started because people are clueless about web hosting, blogging software, affiliate marketing, social media, etc.  Soon, I will be offering people the opportunity to remove that roadblock from their path.  What if someone set it all up for you?

Being a part of the Techology Show has given me the podcasting bug.  I found the Podcast Answer Man and his advice has only challenged and encouraged me more.  So, my goal is to launch two podcasts by the end of the month.  They will be weekly and the Chase Your Lion podcast will focus on helping people discover their Purpose, Passion, and Possibilities.  Over on the newly revamped Heath Mullikin dot com, the podcast will focus on pastoring in a small town while the blog will focus on…a little bit of everything.  I think I’ve got something to bring to the table when it comes to bringing BIG ideas to smaller communities.

I recently was adding up a lot of time wasters in my life.  It was convicting.  Yes, I am committing that wasted time and energy to pursue God’s calling in these areas and continue running in 5k’s when the opportunity arises.  I actually ran a mile without stopping this morning which was a HUGE milestone for me.  What good is it to seek to be used greatly by God is you’re not healthy enough to sustain it?  What good is it to be healthy if you’re wasting you life away?

I think what I’m trying to say is:  Come join the adventure.

Why I Haven't Been Blogging

It has been nearly 2 months since I have posted on Chase Your Lion.  Have I quit blogging?  Have I given up my dreams?  Did I catch or (gasp!) stop chasing my lion?

As most of you know, I became the Senior Pastor of Oakway Wesleyan Church back in August.  This has been a great, but challenging transition for us.  There is a HUGE difference between being a youth pastor and a senior pastor(that goes both ways BTW).  There is a weight and a burden that I had never experienced before.  In trying to move the church forward, reach our community, and spend quality time with my family [Read more…] about Why I Haven't Been Blogging

Who Gets the Credit?

The Scales of Justice

In 1996, I came up with a t-shirt idea for Southern Wesleyan University known as the “Swuperman.”  I asked Mike Keaton, one of the admissions counselors at the time, if we could do a shirt with a Superman type logo with a “WU” beside it.  The next day, he had the design ready and the rest is history.  Thousands of the “Swuperman” shirts have [Read more…] about Who Gets the Credit?
