Accountability and Weigh In #1

Which way are you going?

Last week I posted about our new Accountability Group.  I heard a guy say last month that people who publicily announce their goals seldom reach them because talking about it makes them feel good enough not to follow through.  Here’s the low down:

1.  I’ve been reading James 1 this week, over and over. Here’s James 1: 2-4

Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance.  Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

This has been a week of trials.  I awoke Monday morning to discover that my other blog had been hacked.  I hadn’t backed up my data in a while so it appears I will have to start from scratch.  This was a set back because of the time it took to secure that site and all the others I am hosting.  I am finding that the things you haven’t budgeting time for are the things that take the most time.  The trials of this week follow a great Sunday at Oakway Wesleyan and an amazing Trunk or Treat on Sunday night.  We partnered with two other local churches to minister to 2,000 people with 53 cars supplying the candy.  What a great night!  I should have expected Satan to come at me hard this week.  I am sad to report the following.

2.  My diet has been horrible this week.  Too much fast food and more soda in this one week than the entire past year combined(consider that I gave it up last year).  My weight stands at 205 and I did zero walking this week.  I could make excuses all day long.  I am not discouraged because through it all God has been with me and I know he want me to be “mature and complete.”

3.  Date night this weekend with my wife.  Excited to spend some time with her!

4.  Sabbath on Saturday.  This will include cutting the grass which means listening to some of my favorite worship music and podcasts.  A welcome break from the typical day.  Is it weird that I love cutting the grass(and folding laundry)?  What’s wrong with me?

5.  I got a lot of church work done.  Finished some down the road sermon preparation and upgraded the website.  I am also looking forward to our partnership with Dot’s Kitchen, a local soup kitchen.  We will be using the church van to pick up people in the community who need a hot meal, but have no way to get to Dot’s

There were parts of this week where I felt victorious and others where I felt defeated.  I’m gonna to enjoy my Sabbath and date night tomorrow and get rested up for Sunday.  Tomorrow is a new day full of amazing possibilities.  How about you?  Did you exercise consistently this week?  What about your diet?  Did you spend quality time in God’s word and have a day of rest?  We’re all in this together.

Meeting Tim Kirkpatrick

I Think I Know What I Did This Summer

If you’ve checked the About or History page you have seen some changes.  I am no longer the Youth Pastor at Denton Wesleyan Church after accepting the Senior Pastor position at Oakway Wesleyan.  I’m just as surprised as you are.  I entered the summer with plans for the fall for our youth ministry including a revamped 642 news, but God had other plans.  Here’s a quick timeline of what’s happened since my last post:

June 13-18-Middle School Camp at Victory Mountain Camp with speaker Kenneth Wagner.

June 20-25-High School Camp at Victory Mountain Camp with speaker Dave Bever.

June 28-July 2-Spoke at Shenanodah Youth Camp at VMC.  My car got hit by a hit and run hay bale on the way to camp.  Crushed my front left fender and the dude just keep going.  Got a call while at camp about the opening at Oakway Wesleyan and set up a lunch with the District Superintendent.

July 3-10-Vacation in South Carolina at my parents.  Worked with my brother and 100 United Methodist teens from the south in Pendleton for Salkehatchie and spoke on Monday night.  Met with the DS on Thursday and Karen and I both felt a strong pull towards Oakway.  We also got the chance to meet with their Board and hear their thoughts and hearts.  It was very encouraging.

July 17-24-Mission Trip to Philadelphia.  Got to be reunited with the great people Chichester United Wesleyan Church as our team worked with them and various ministries in and around the city.

July 25-Announced my resignation to the Denton congregation and received tremendous support and love from everyone.  Senior Pastor Charlie Collins really lead the way in this and had some extremely kind words about Karen and me before offering a Spirit-filled prayer on our behalf.  I immediately bookmarked the moment in my mind.  It was powerful.

August 6-10-Tricia Pusey came to stay with us and hang out with the Dentonites she had met while we were in Philly.  It was a great time of catching up and looking ahead.

August 13-Folks from Oakway came and helped us load all of our stuff onto two trailers.  They then unloaded everything in the new parsonage in SC.  That night I spoke at the NC East District Lock-In and got to make even more memories with some great people.

August 15-Our last day at Denton and traveling to Oakway.  Got the kids later than planned, but they were excited to get up the next day for…

August 16-First Day of Second grade and my first day as a Senior Pastor!

August 21-My 11th Wedding Anniversary where we(at least me) were surprised by a visit from the Hynes.

August 22-First Sunday at Oakway.  Great crowd and a great meal following the service.

So, there you have it.  11 weeks of sheer craziness.  But God is good, and life is an adventure.  A year ago, I started Chase Your Lion. I know now, that I started that site so I would have the courage to take these steps this summer.  As my wife said,”it can’t be alright for everyone else to Chase Their Lion, but for you to play it safe.”  The rest of this week I will be sharing what’s been going on in my mind through this whole transition, the differences between being a youth pastor and a senior pastor, and how you can know when it’s time for a change.

Episode 40-God Changes Everything

527151: In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day

Ever been in the wrong place at the wrong time…several times? These memories leave you with an ill taste in your mouth, and nothing good seems to come from them. But what if the seemingly messy pieces of your life were actually strategically positioned by God? What if you’ve actually been in the right place at the right time every time? In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day will help you make sense of your past. You’ll begin to connect the dots to see clearly how God has been preparing you for future opportunities. With a God’s-eye perspective, you’ll soon be thanking Him – even for lions, pits, and snowy days.
