Even Wesleyan Pastors Make Mistakes

I missed the mark this time.

I received a message last night that this blog had sent out upwards of 400 emails to everyone who subscribes to this blog via email.  First, let me offer my sincerest apologies for blanketing your inbox with what must have seemed like a spam attack from Uranus.  Even Wesleyan pastors make mistakes.

Secondly, I want to explain why this happened and [Read more…] about Even Wesleyan Pastors Make Mistakes

10 Surprises at Wesleyan General Conference 2012

As you may or may not know, I participated in the 2012 Wesleyan General Conference in Lexington, KY as part of the Techology Show.  We oversaw a chat room during all the rallies and business sessions, hosted a round table discussion after each session, conducted interviews with leaders, speakers, and authors, and live streamed the pre-conference events.  This was my first time attending a Wesleyan General Conference and I’ve spoken before about changes I’d like to see in our denomination.  There were a few things that surprised me.  These are in no particular order.

10.  Non-delegates could purchase Delegate packets for $20.  Everything they had was available for all to see.  This only magnified the unofficial theme of “Transparency.”  This made it easy for guests to follow along with all the business proceedings.

9.  I had no idea I would be sitting next to and chatting with the next Wesleyan HQ chief of staff all week in David Drury.

8.  I underestimated Dr. Keith Drury’s knowledge and insight of Wesleyan Church policies, politics, and personalities.  Shame on me because the guy literally co-wrote the book on it.

7.  I needed a 15 minute break [Read more…] about 10 Surprises at Wesleyan General Conference 2012

Wesleyan General Conference 2012 Live Stream Tutorial

I am so excited to be a part of The Techology Show’s presence at the 2012 Wesleyan General Conference.  Matthew Tietje and I will be driving up on Friday and during the week I’ll be joined by David Drury, Stevan Sheets(who blogged about his GC adventure here), Dr. Keith Drury, Tony Casey and others for round tables and interviews.  Our goal is to bring the sights, sounds, and Spirit of the Conference straight into your home.  How about some GC viewing parties?!  Many have asked how it’s going to work and I’m pleased to present this 7 minute video with all of the details:

I’m excited to be a part of the SoulShift event, the Prequel, and General Conference itself.  Here’s the conference schedule and we will posting videos to our youtube page and web site.

Don’t Let a Hacked Blog Stop You

start something new
Do you need a fresh start?

Several months ago, this blog was hacked.  I started blogging on MySpace years ago, then moved to notes on Facebook.  Next came dailydoseofheath.wordpress.com before I finally bought Heathmullikin.com and moved to a hosted account.  Later on, The Daily Dose of Heath became a video show as I did my best to be One Man, One Mic, Three Minutes.  That’s when, due to a weak login and password, the blog was hacked with a code so embedded that the good folks at Bluehost couldn’t even pin point everywhere it was.  I purchased WordPress Defender to ensure that nothing like that ever happened again to my blog or any blog that I built.  I then set up the domain www.heathmullikin.com to forward to ChaseYourLion.com as I took some time to determine my next step.

After much prayer and deliberation, I have decided that this blog will do 2 things:

1.  Tell my story as the pastor of a rural church and…

2.  Encourage other rural pastors(although non-rural pastors are certainly welcome).

That’s why this week, I will be launching the Rural Pastor Podcast and fire the keyboard back up for some new adventures.

I’m excited to get a second chance at blogging here.  Starting from scratch isn’t all bad as I will get to apply a lot of what I’ve learned now from the very beginning.  With that said, I will leave most of the blogging advice for Chase Your Lion where this week I will be announcing how new/wanna be bloggers can get over the hump and get started.

If you’re a Rural Pastor I encourage you to join the discussion and contact me with any questions, comments, or topics you think should be covered by the blog and podcast.  Have a great week!

The Next Step

Here's the Next Step

I recently shared why I haven’t been blogging consistently.  I have been reading voraciously lately(on my new Kindle) as I strive to lead Oakway Wesleyan forward.  Also, this summer I will begin ministering at Common Ground Community Church which is 9 miles from Oakway.  I will be preaching at both locations every Sunday starting in late July.  The books I’ve been reading from Nelson Searcy(like Fusion: Turning First-Time Guests into Fully-Engaged Members of Your Church) have been invaluable.  I’ve also been listening his his podcast.  I am really trying to invest a lot in my relationship with God and develop my skills as a speaker and pastor.  Another book that has influenced me is The Millionaire Messenger.  I really believe that there is money to be made online and blogging is a great way for someone to have influence and pay the bills.

I am constantly learning more and more about blogging and online marketing.  I know I’ve only scratched the surface of what I can accomplish.  I am amazed at how many people want to start blogging, but have no idea where to start or they don’t realize the full potential that blogging has to provide a platform and side income.  I am committed to:

Helping people Discover and Use their Unique Voice through blogging.

Sometimes the hardest part is getting started because people are clueless about web hosting, blogging software, affiliate marketing, social media, etc.  Soon, I will be offering people the opportunity to remove that roadblock from their path.  What if someone set it all up for you?

Being a part of the Techology Show has given me the podcasting bug.  I found the Podcast Answer Man and his advice has only challenged and encouraged me more.  So, my goal is to launch two podcasts by the end of the month.  They will be weekly and the Chase Your Lion podcast will focus on helping people discover their Purpose, Passion, and Possibilities.  Over on the newly revamped Heath Mullikin dot com, the podcast will focus on pastoring in a small town while the blog will focus on…a little bit of everything.  I think I’ve got something to bring to the table when it comes to bringing BIG ideas to smaller communities.

I recently was adding up a lot of time wasters in my life.  It was convicting.  Yes, I am committing that wasted time and energy to pursue God’s calling in these areas and continue running in 5k’s when the opportunity arises.  I actually ran a mile without stopping this morning which was a HUGE milestone for me.  What good is it to seek to be used greatly by God is you’re not healthy enough to sustain it?  What good is it to be healthy if you’re wasting you life away?

I think what I’m trying to say is:  Come join the adventure.

Jeff Eckart Interview-Claim Your Campus and Never the Same Camp

I recently got to interview Jeff Eckart, the founder of Claim Your Campus and director of NTS Camp, at the Gathering.  Jeff was a long-time youth pastor at Kentwood Community Church in Grand Rapids, MI.  [Read more…] about Jeff Eckart Interview-Claim Your Campus and Never the Same Camp
